1969 Lotus Elan - VARA 2000 DP3 Championship car + enclosed Wells Cargo Trailer
This 1969 Lotus Elan was raced for 1 and 1/2 seasons with VARA before being packed up and left
in storage. I built the car keeping it as close to stock as possible with consideration for
safety and weight savings. The frame was cleaned and powdercoated with 26R style reinforcements
at engine mount and suspension frame points. Engine was rebuilt from ground up using the original
parts with Stromberg carbs. Only the crankshaft is non-stock - used a differnt Lotus crank to
increase compression. Engine dyno'd 120 HP at the flywheel. Radiator is alluminum which greatly
improves cooling. Headlights, and vaccum pump to operate them is removed - I have the 26R
plexiglass inserts to replace them. The body was left original except for 26R flares added to the
rear that are beautfully done - which allow for 5.0x22.0x13 rubber on Pansport wheels. The roll
cage is a carefully designed lightweight chrome-alloy which is bolted to the frame - allowing for
easy removal in case of major repairs. Cobra seat, Simpson belts, quick-release steering wheel,
wood dash remains, but interior is stripped of carpet and extra gadgets. The original rear axle
rubber donuts were replaced with VW axles to eliminate safety concerns. Springs are upgraded
Eibach's and the suspension tuning is quite good - adjustable STAX shocks in the rear. I have a
spare seat that fits in the passenger side for ride-arounds.
Wells Cargo Trailer is a CW612 - enclosed trailer with linolium floor, custom aluminum rack inside
for tools, tires, gas jugs, jacks, etc. All of this was run for only a year and a half and is in
excellent shape. No extra special work should be required to get this into race-ready condition -
change fluids, tune, and dust.
This car regularly beat all but the very top 3 C Production cars (see Picture which is me about
to pass two leading C Production 912's at Temecula race in 2000). With a change to Weber heads, it
would beat alot of B Production cars. I haven't been able to race since 2000 and I'd rather see
the car enjoyed than gathering dust! Use it or lose it!
