Longtime fans of the late Dale Earnhardt are quite familiar with Kirk Shelmerdine. They know him as the leader of the championship pit crew nicknamed the "Flying Aces" and the "Junkyard Dogs," and he was Earnhardt's crew chief for four of his seven Winston Cup titles. But about 10 years ago Shelmerdine left Richard Childress Racing. He needed a lifestyle change. Being a crew chief was getting "pretty old" and there were things in his personal life that needed his attention. "I'd been stuck under the hood of a Winston Cup car since I was 18 years old," he said. "I was 30 before I ever stood up, looked around and saw what else was out there. Once I started doing that I noticed there were other things in life and it was going to take more time than I had to devote to it. The driving opportunities came up afterwards."
