  • Auction Status.

We reported in earlier newsletters, that we had an agreement with iDEAL International, Inc to provide Auctions to The Racers Network. We also reported that the Auction area would be up and running by early March, and that the auctions would be a Free service to all of our users.

The agreement with iDEAL has been cancelled. Our Auctions would have taken a "Back Seat" to them auctioning off new computer systems, computer software, and computer parts. Our Motorsports area would Not have been the main focus of the auctions.

We took the time to explore many options, which even included us partnering with a competitor. In the end, we decided to purchase auction software. By doing this, you do not have to count on anyone else coming through so that you can either place an auction or place a bid on an auction. The software is just about through the testing process, and we will be setting it up in the next few days.

Even though we missed the target date of early March, we believe that the way that it will now operate will be well worth the wait. The Auctions will be available in the April 13-20 time frame.

We will still go with the original plan which called for several categories including:
    - Race Cars.
    - Parts.
    - Trailers.
    - Transporters.
    - Tickets.
    - Collectibles.

And in addition to these, we will be able to auction just about anything (NO Human Body Parts). So, go through your attics, basements, and garages and Get Ready!!!

Unfortunately, we will have to charge for the auction item placements. There will be No Charge, however, for bidding on auctions. The cost of the software is Hefty!! and with our current lack of advertisers, the cost to us is too great to not have to charge our users. We DID NOT want it to happen this way, but with our strong emphasis on Motorsports we will be able to produce results for you. This should negate the charge for item placement. We will keep our rates as low as we can go (Less that eBay for instance).

We know that this will be a Great Addition to The Racers Network.

  • Petersen Museum Celebrates the Historic Mexican Road Races.

Dave Linden, Public Relations Manager 3231964-63A.A. LOS ANGELES, California (March 1, 2000)

Peterson Automotive Museum Celebrates the Historic Mexican Road Races of 1950-1954

Cars, Drivers and Crew from the Five-year Racing Span to Convene at Petersen Automotive Museum May 6, 2000.

Cinco de Mayo, the 5th of May, 2000, will be the 50th anniversary of the inaugural Mexican Road Race. To commemorate this historic event, also known as La Carrera Panamericana, the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles is gathering the cars, drivers and crew for a special evening at the Museum on Saturday, May 6, 2000 from 6 p.m to 10pm. Tickets are $45 per person.

The winner from 50 years ago, Herschel McGriff, will attend with an exact replica of his winning Oldsmobile. Other famous driver/car combinations in attendance will include Phil Hill and his second place 375 Ferrari and Ak Miller with his replica Caballo de Hierro Hot Rod, 1953/54. Featured drivers include Jack McAfee, Carroll Shelby, Chuck Daigh and many more.

In the post-World War II years, a major highway project was started in Mexico; connecting their northern border at Juarez, across the Rio Grande from Texas and their southern border 2178 miles away at El Ocotal on the Guatemalan border. The Panamerican Highway was to be completed in mid-1950 and an all-out road race was sanctioned by the government of Mexico to promote tourism and commerce the length of the country. Cinco de Mayo, a national holiday celebrating Mexico's defeat of the invading French army at Puebla in 1862 was chosen as the starting in Juarez.

One-hundred thirty-two cars, mostly U.S. sedans, were entered in the first event which covered nine legs over six days. Herschel McGriff of Portland, Oregon did not win a single leg but drove a smart race in his 1950 Oldsmobile 88 to outlast the hard chargers and win the first Mexican Road Race. Total time was 27 hours, 34 minutes at an average speed of 78.421 mph.

For the races following, the direction was reversed; starting in the South at Tuxtla Gutierrez and ending after five days at the northern border in Juarez. Worldwide publicity created an aura about the event and attracted between 100 to 200 entries each subsequent year. Public concern about driver and spectator fatalities during the races caused the Carrera Panamericana to be canceled after race number five in November 1954.

For event information call Susan Garcia at 323-964-6359.

  • Monthly Featured Advertisements Now Accepting Visa/MasterCard

In an attempt to boost the usage of the Monthly Featured Advertisement, we are in the process of re-vamping the benefit. We are expanding the number of Divisions and Sanctioning bodies to open this benefit up for more advertisers. This expansion takes a considerable amount of time to accomplish, so the completion of the project will take a few months.

In the past, you had to fill out a form by hand and mail us a check in order to have your advertisement become the featured ad. We NOW offer this benefit via Credit Card.

We know that there is some concern about paying by credit card on the Internet, and we also know that every site on the Internet claims that their site is safe and secure.

Well.... The Racers Network IS Truly SAFE and SECURE. We purchased software that performs online real-time processing using the SSL (Secure Socket) technology. Your card is checked for authenticity while you are in the secure section. The Card Processing company e-Mails you a receipt of your transaction (Minus your credit card number). They send us a copy of the e-Mail (Minus your credit card number) so that we know what Category and Division you purchased. And the funds are deposited into our bank account (Minus your Credit Card number) so that even an employee at our bank does not have access to your number.

    Now.... That's SAFE and SECURE.

The cost of this software was considerable, but your safety and well being are our major concern.

We hope that with an on-line form to fill out and accepting credit cards will attract more users of this great benefit. Remember..... The Racers Network Produces Results!!!
