New Year's Fun.
Eduardo Leon, Director General of La Carrera Panamericana and The
Millennium Rally, (originally scheduled to begin in Vancouver, Canada
December 25, 1999) just notified me that the rally will now start in
Las Vegas on December 27th, allowing the competitors to spend
Christmas with their families. The Millennium Rally is a T/S/D
(Time, Speed, Distance) scored event for modern cars model years 1998
- 2000. Flat out racing is confined to Special Sections of road
that are totally closed. The new schedule is:
December 27 - Technical Inspection and Prologue at the Las Vegas
Motor Speedway.
December 28 - Las Vegas to Ensenada, Baja, Mexico
December 29 - Ensenada to La Paz, Baja Sur
December 30 - 2 Special Sections - To and from San Juan de la Costa
December 31 - Special Section to Pichnilingue Harbor & loading of
vehicles.
The beginning of the New Year's Eve festivities aboard the ferry
Jan 1, 2000 - Arrival and day off in Mazatlan
Jan 2 through Jan 6 - Original schedule finishing in Cancun.
If you hear the words:"we're going to do a ''cannonball," do you
get excited?
(If so, this is going to be a good one!)
Where you are going to be on New Years Eve? Spending $10 large to see
Streisand in Vegas with a bunch of "blue hairs" or enjoying a party
while crossing the Gulf of Mexico from La Paz Baja to Mazatlan as the
clock strikes 12 and we enter the year 2000.
Do you remember the old record attempts everyone tried to establish
back in the 1960's? They still set them in the SCORE Baja 1000 except
they run off-road. Over the years there have been several attempts to
run a "road race" down the Baja but to no avail. Until now that is.
Since the start date changed to "after Christmas," I started thinking
that this is an opportunity for a "Brand New Race" in Mexico. Anyone
who has run with us will tell you that Eduardo puts on (one of) the
best races in the world. I know since this will be my 33rd in the
last 15 years.
The ferry is already booked, the Controls for timing & scoring ready,
and Julio Tovar, 2nd Commander of the Mexican Federal Highway Patrol,
will be traveling with us closing the road. I did the check of the
route book from Vegas to Ensenada and it is right on the money. The
Millennium Rally is about to Start.
I asked if we could run "touring and historic cars (Panam types),"
doing just the "Las Vegas- Mazatlan" legs, and he said OK. That way
we can drive back up the west coast through Guaymas to the border with
a Highway Patrol escort.
Eligibility of cars follows the rules of the original La Carrera
Classic: street legal with roll bar, seat belts and mandatory safety
equipment. In short, anything with 5-wheels: 4 for the road and 1 to
steer with. We will be scored separately from the Millennium Rally
cars and the field will determine the classes. All finishers will
receive the same size trophies commemorating their finish.
Day One - December 28th. The start in Las Vegas will be a lot of fun.
The Starting Order will be determined by lap times at the Las Vegas
Motor Speedway. Then a very fast leg to the border at Tecate with a
couple of Special Stages before Ensenada. (See you at Hussong's!)
Day Two - December 29th. The stage from Ensenada to La Paz is 800
miles of Mexican two-lane blacktop that can be driven at speed
(100+ mph). Although we are starting very early AM, it is still going
to require a few hours of night driving to the finish in La Paz.
Additional lighting would be an asset. The goal is still the same as
the old days: "Get to La Paz before the bars close." It's a chance to
record your Personal Best time for "doing the Baja."
Day Three - December 30th. Special Sections - La Paz.
Day Four - December 31st. Special Section to the ferry and boarding.
On the trip across the Gulf of Mexico New Year's Eve you'll enjoy a
gala gourmet dinner party and bench race with a bunch of like-minded
racer friends, both old and new.
Day Five - January 1st, 2000. Arrival in Mazatlan and Day Off.
Trophy presentation and prepare for return trip to the border.
It feels like fun and I'm going to do it. You are invited to join us.
Call with any questions, car eligibility and for entry information.
The entry fee is an affordable $1000.00 including hotels.
